Star Parties

For members who enjoy observing the skies,  individual A.S.T.R.A. members may hold an informal and unofficial  "star party" usually on a weekend (weather permitting). The date depends on the phase of the Moon. Bright moonlight drowns out stars and other faint objects, so star parties are held on nights with little or no moonlight. Star parties give people a chance to observe many sky objects and to compare telescopes and accessories. Seperate from these private star parties;  A.S.T.R.A.  hosts Public Star Parties  know as StarWatches several times a year.  Members of A.S.T.R.A. may also attend star parties held at other locations such as The South Jersey Star Party and Stellafane.

A.S.T.R.A. members may host  informal and unofficial Star Parties.
They may be held at Coyle Field.

These are organized privetly and may be mentioned at our message board.

--StarWatches--
The Novins Planetarium and A.S.T.R.A. holds a public observing sessions, Spring, Summer and Fall.

The date is chosen as the Friday closest to the first-quarter Moon,  but may be changed if a special astronomical event occurs during that month.

Starting about sunset, telescopes are set up on the lawn outside the Planetarium. Many club members, as well as Planetarium staff, are available to answer questions and help with the telescopes. In good weather, the session may last until 11:00 PM or later. Club members bringing telescopes may want to arrive earilier, to be able to set up prior to nightfall..

Visitors have a chance to view the Moon, any planets that may be visible, and more distant objects, such as double stars, star clusters, nebulae, or galaxies.

In the event of bad weather, visitors can still see the 8:00 PM planetarium show, which is given regardless of the weather. There is an admission charge for the show, but the sky viewing is free of charge. Everyone is welcome!
